Otot adalah kumpulan sel otot yang membentuk jaringan yang berfungsi menyelenggarakan gerakan organ tubuh. Otot merupakan alat gerak aktif, sedangkan rangka tubuh merupakan alat gerak pasif. Otot tidak hanya menggerakan rangka tubuh.

Misalnya otot-otot polos penyusun usus menggerakkan makanan, dan otot jantung memompa darah. Otot penggerak rangka tubuh dikenal sehari-hari sebagai daging. Sel-sel otot mempunyai kemampuan berkontraksi. Kontraksi adalah melakukan pengerutan sehingga bentuk sel otot memendek.

Setelah berkontraksi, otot melakukan relaksasi. Relaksasi adalah melakukan pengenduran sehingga bentuk sel otot memanjang. Dengan berkontraksi, otot memiliki tenaga mekanik untuk pergerakan. Tenaga itu dihasilkan melalui proses pernapasan sel.
